Welcome to Bear Lake
You will be blown away by the views over the mountains and surrounding alpine forests.
The lake covers an area of about 39 hectares and measures almost 40 meters in depth. Its surface measures 1.5 sq/km with the coast line about 3 km in total.
You will even see two fully-grown brown bears that were rescued after their mother was killed on the approach roads to the lake some years ago and are now held for breeding nearby to the lake.
The Lake
Bear (Kočevje) Lake is one of the cleanest and deepest lakes in Slovenia. The formation of the artificial lake dates back to years between 1973 and 1978 when the bottom of the basin of the brown coal mine was gradually filled with water.
Coal mining was a 175-year-old tradition, but today only a few buildings around the lake and names such as "Festunga" and "Kipa" are reminiscent of the coal mining tradition.
The Stock
This natural Slovenian lake offers some fantastic action and many fish to over 70lb.
The fish in this lake are growing at record rates each year and the lake currently has over 20 x 60lb+, 50 x 50lb+ and 150 x 40lb+ carp and hundreds of fish 28lb+.
Catch rates between 5 and 10 fish per day is normal here if you are situated in one of the prime areas (which we will of course make sure that you are). Catfish well in excess of 100lb also reside in the lake.
The Experience
Although this is a relatively unknown lake to most of those outside of Slovenia, Bear Lake is a destination for the pioneer anglers who travel from all around Europe to fish from its picturesque banks.
With good carp stock of common, mirror and linear carp as well as some elusive grass carp you are sure of some amazing days fishing and lots of action catching some fantastic big fish at Bear lake.
Guides
Our local guide, Bruno Solaja, heads up the guiding at Bear Lake, he'll set you up, advise on the best places to fish, explain the swims and features of the lake and be available as required to help in any way to ensure you have all you need to catch the big carp that reside in this stunning lake.
A WhatsApp group chat will be set up for each visiting party to ensure that you can contact the guide easily and get any information you require.
