If you are planning on driving to a European lake it is more than likely you'll be driving on one of the many toll roads that link the major cities or through a country that requires the purchase of a mandatory vignette (road tax).

GENERALLY TOLL FREE

These countries do not charge to use the roads in general although there are a few exception including major tunnels and bridges all of which can be paid at time of travel.

ROAD TOLLS

Normally paid by the kilometre although sometimes there can be flat charges for certain sections. Just turn up at the booth, roll down the window and pay up, either cash or a debit/credit card (but watch out for card charges). The payment method and/or vehicle type normally determines the lane to use.

Croatia

In Croatia, motorway toll price depends on vehicle category and travelled distance. There is an extra 10% seasonal charge when you travel throughout Croatia between c.16th of June and c.14th of September. More details can be found here.

Motorway toll price depends on vehicle category, divided into vehicles with weight up to 3.5 tonnes and over 3.5 tonnes. Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes must be equipped with an AutoPASS tag. More details can be found here.

Spain

There are two types of motorways in Spain called Autovia and Autopista. Autopista (AP) motorways are charged and Autovia (A) motorways are free. Fee for passage of Autopista motorways depends on length of time and vehicle category. The average price is c. £ 8,08/ 100 km by car. More details can be found here.

VIGNETTE STICKERS

Apply to the whole road network or just the ‘national network’ of motorways and some dual carriageways (expressways). Almost all countries that use vignettes sell a range, depending on the length of the visit, though one day/transit passes are no longer available. One week/ten days is the modern minimum, then one month/two-months and one year. The prices also vary by vehicle category – motorbike, car, minibus/motorhome, truck, etc.

Austria

Since 1997, vignettes are required for all vehicles of up to 3.5 tonnes, driving on motorways and expressways (prefixed with letters A and S). Additional tolls are charged for certain motorway sections where tollgates and video tolling systems are installed. Several sections require drivers to buy electronic toll cards.

Bulgaria

Vignettes are required for all (except motorcycles) vehicles driving on all public roads, with the exception of streets in cities, towns and villages. Vignettes are usually valid from the time they are purchased, while some types can be marked to start from a future date.

Czech Republic

Vignettes are required for the use of motorways and expressways by all vehicles of up to 3.5 tonnes.

Hungary

Vignettes are required for all vehicles on motorways and expressways. Physical toll stickers were replaced with electronic vignettes and video tolling on 1 January 2008, the only physical item the purchaser receives is a control coupon.

Moldova

Vignettes are obligatory for personal motor vehicles registered abroad, driving on public roads.

Romania

With the exception of motorcycles, vignettes are required for all vehicles driving on all national roads and motorways. Physical vignettes have been replaced with electronic ones since 1 October 2010.

Slovakia

Vignettes are obligatory for all vehicles of up to 3.5 tonnes, driving on Slovak motorways.

Switzerland

All travellers using motorways and expressways are required to purchase an annual vignette. Switzerland only offers a vignette valid for a year at CHF 40 (€35.75).
