Lake Alqueva

Lake Alqueva in the south-east of Portugal, is the largest artificial lake in Europe, built on the Guadiana. This dam has a reservoir of 250 km2 spread over five municipalities of the Alentejo (+ more than 1200 kms of shores), with many points of interest. On the right bank, you are greeted by the castles of Juromenha, Alandroal, Terena, Monsaraz and Portel and, on the left bank, Mourão and Moura offer privileged viewpoints on this stretch of water.

This lake gives a strange atmosphere to this region. Where once fields, olive groves, cork oaks and holm oaks grew, there is now a body of water and a new life, with excellent conditions for predator fishing. (pikeperch, pike, black bass, barbeau comizo …)

You will discover an area where the sky is considered by UNESCO as a reserve for stargazing. At night, public lighting is reduced to a minimum, to allow perfect conditions for observing the sky, both for astronomers and for simple amateurs.
