La Charente – Secteur Bourg-Charente
The Charente - Sector Bourg-Charente - is a French river in the Aquitaine Basin crossing the departments of Charente (16), a small part of Vienne (86), Charente-Maritime (17) before flowing into the Atlantic Ocean between Port-des-Barques and Fouras by a large estuary. Having its source in Chéronnac in Haute-Vienne (87) at an altitude of 295 meters, it winds through magnificent and diverse landscapes. Its total length is 381 kilometers, of which 224 kilometers concern the only department of Charente. Taken in a straight line from its source to its mouth, its length is only 160 kilometers, it is more than doubled by the many meanders. The river is navigable for 196 kilometers from Montignac located at the 40-meter coast, but especially from Angoulême at the 29-meter mark to the Atlantic Ocean. In practice, only 179 kilometers are really navigable thanks to 21 locks, 2 of which are classified maritime. It offers a rich fish population of predators (pike, pike perch, perch, catfish), white fish and wild carp of intermediate size with subjects weighing up to 20 kg. It is a river very popular with nature lovers and fishermen.
