Le Canal Charente / Seudre
The canal de la Charente à la Seudre, also called canal de la Bridoire, is a canal located in the south-western part of the department of Charente-Maritime (New Aquitaine region). It is a junction canal between the Charente and the Seudre. With a total length of 27 kilometers, it connects the towns of Marennes and Saint-Hippolyte (near Rochefort) via three locks and three guard gates. Main collector of the Brouage marsh, it is the longest canal in Charente-Maritime. Originally designed to link the town of Rochefort and the great arsenal of Ponant to the stronghold of Brouage (via the Brouage canal), it was extended to Marennes and the Seudre estuary in the 19th century. The canal is a spot used by water sports enthusiasts (stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, etc.) and its surroundings have been partially converted into a pedestrian promenade and cycle path.
