Le Canal d’Aire

The Aire canal is a French canal located in the Pas-de-Calais department (62), in the Hauts de France region. The Aire canal connects the Neuffossé canal in Aire-sur-la-Lys with the Deûle canal in Bauvin. It is a segment of the Dunkirk-Escaut canal. It was widened in 1968 and became a full gauge canal. It has an average width of 50 meters and a depth of 3.5 meters to 6 meters for a length of 39 kilometers. The speed of its current depends on the navigation present on its course. Cut in reaches, it can have different and variable fish populations depending on the time or year. Indeed, carp can change reaches through the locks. It is home to a rich diversity of white fish (bream, rudd, vandoise, roach, crucian, tench), predators (pike, pike perch, perch) and beautiful common carp and mirrors of intermediate size. Note also the presence of migratory fish such as eel. The bottoms are particularly flat and edge fishing should be favored on the one hand because most of the natural food is concentrated there, and on the other hand when navigation is regular, it is better to avoid fishing. in the center of the canal. The nature of the canal bottoms will depend on the substrate in which it was dug, but be aware that, except recent cleaning, mud may be present over most of the width. The natural food is mainly composed of larvae and insects, although anodont mussels can also be found on some and some American crayfish when there are grassland spots that should be fished as a priority. The uniformity of the banks is actually an asset in the sense that any anomaly or structure along the banks attracts carp and should guide you in choosing a position.
